# What is a withdrawal deadline (W grade)?

> The withdrawal deadline is the last day you can leave a course after add/drop and receive a W on your transcript instead of a letter grade. A W usually doesn't count toward your GPA, but it does show that you started the course.

## How does a W grade work?

The withdrawal window usually opens after add/drop and closes somewhere past the middle of the term. A W typically isn't calculated into your GPA, and tuition is usually not refunded by then.

Details vary by school: some cap how many W's you can take, some use different letters (like WD or WDR), and withdrawing can affect financial aid or full-time status. Check with your registrar and financial aid office first.

## How Dash helps with the withdrawal deadline

Dash can tell you your school's withdrawal date with the official source and text you before it, so it's a choice you make on time. It can also book an advising appointment on your school's site once you say yes.

## Questions

### Does a W hurt my GPA?

At most schools, no. A W usually isn't calculated into your GPA, but it does stay on your transcript.

### Is a W better than an F?

Usually, because an F counts toward your GPA and a W typically doesn't. Many W's on a transcript can raise questions, so talk to an advisor if you're considering several.

### Can withdrawing affect my financial aid?

It can. Dropping below full-time or failing to make progress can affect grants and loans, so ask your financial aid office before you withdraw.
