How do you email a professor?

Use your school email, put the course code and your question in the subject line, greet them by title, explain what you need in a few sentences, and sign off with your full name and section. Check the syllabus first in case it already answers your question.

What goes in an email to a professor?

  • Subject line: the course code and the point, like "BIOL 101: question about lab 3."
  • Greeting: "Dear Professor Lee" or "Hi Dr. Lee." Use the title from the syllabus if you're not sure.
  • Who you are: your name and the course and section, since they teach many students.
  • Your ask: one clear question or request, in two or three sentences.
  • Sign-off: "Thank you," then your full name and student number if your school uses them.

Is there a template you can copy?

Subject: [Course code]: [your question in a few words]

Dear Professor [Last name], I'm [your name] in [course code], section [number]. [One or two sentences on what you need, such as a question about an assignment or a request to meet.] Would [specific ask, like "office hours on Thursday"] work for you? Thank you, [Full name], [student number if used]

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Asking something the syllabus already answers.
  • Writing from a personal address when your school expects school email.
  • Long backstories. Keep it short; offer to explain more in office hours.
  • Expecting a reply within minutes. Give it a couple of business days before a polite follow-up.

Can Dash help you email a professor?

Yes. Tell Dash what you need and it drafts the email with the right course and professor, shows you the exact message, and sends it from your Gmail or Outlook only after you say yes.

Questions students ask

Should I call them Professor or Dr.?

Use whatever the syllabus or course page uses. If you're unsure, "Professor" plus their last name is a safe choice.

How long should I wait for a reply?

A couple of business days is reasonable. After that, a short, polite follow-up is fine.

Can I email a professor about my grade?

Yes, but ask to understand it rather than argue it, and many professors prefer to talk about grades in office hours.
