What are the most important parts of a syllabus?
- The schedule: every assignment, quiz, lab, midterm and final, with dates and times.
- Grade breakdown: what each piece is worth. A 40% final changes how you plan the term.
- Late work policy: whether late work is accepted, the penalty, and whether extensions exist.
- Attendance and participation rules, including whether they count toward your grade.
- Contact details and office hours for the professor and any teaching assistants.
- Required materials: textbooks, software, lab equipment, and where to get them.
- Rules on academic integrity, collaboration and AI tools, which differ a lot between courses.
What should you do with it on the first day?
- Copy the dates outPut every due date and exam into the one calendar or list you use for all your courses.
- Note the big weightsStar anything worth a large share of the grade, so you start it early.
- Save the rules you'll need laterKeep the late policy and the professor's contact details somewhere you can find them the night something goes wrong.
What if the syllabus is vague or changes?
Some syllabi say "date TBA" or "see the course page." Write down what you know, and ask in class or office hours for the rest.
Professors do move dates. Watch announcements in your learning system and your school email, and update your calendar whenever something shifts.
Can Dash read a syllabus for you?
Yes. Text Dash a photo or PDF of the syllabus and it saves every assignment, quiz and exam with its date and weight, then texts you before each one. You can ask it things like "what's the late policy for econ?" from what you sent.
Questions students ask
Do I really need to read the whole syllabus?
Read it once fully. Most of the questions students email professors about are already answered there.
Where do I find the syllabus?
Usually on the course page in your learning system, handed out in the first class, or both. If you can't find it, ask the professor or TA.
Is the syllabus a contract?
Schools treat it differently, and most syllabi say dates can change. Treat it as the plan, and watch for announcements that update it.
