What is academic probation?

Academic probation is a status a college or university places on a student whose GPA drops below the minimum for good academic standing. It's a warning: you can keep studying, but you need to raise your grades by a set deadline.

How does academic probation work?

Schools set a minimum GPA, often around 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in the US. Fall below it and you may be placed on probation, sometimes with a reduced course load or required advising.

If grades don't improve, the next step can be suspension or required time away. Names and rules vary by school (some say academic warning or academic standing), and probation can affect financial aid.

How Dash helps when you're on probation

Dash can find your school's academic standing policy and book an advising appointment once you say yes. Then it keeps every deadline in front of you, builds study plans around your exams, and quizzes you so the next term goes differently.

Questions students ask

Does academic probation go on my transcript?

At some schools, yes. Check your registrar's academic standing page.

Can I lose financial aid on academic probation?

It's possible. Aid often requires satisfactory academic progress, so talk to your financial aid office early.

How do I get off academic probation?

Raise your GPA above your school's minimum within the time it sets, usually a term or two. An advisor can help you plan courses to get there.
